Screw air compressor safety operating procedures—Shared by Sollant
Preparations before starting the screw air compressor
- Check whether the mechanical parts and pipes of the air compressor are connected reliably. If there is any looseness, deal with it in time.
- Check the oil level of the air compressor. When the oil level of the unit is higher than the lowest position on the oil gauge when the unit is shut down, the unit can start and run normally. Affect the normal use of the unit.
- Turn the coupling several times by hand in the specified direction to ensure the flexible rotation of the unit.
- Check whether the electricity meets the requirements of the safety regulations, and then turn on the power supply of the unit after confirmation.

Start-up of screw air compressor
When the air compressor is initially started or restarted after the air compressor and its system equipment are overhauled, the following procedures should be followed:
- a) Check whether all valves are in proper position and correct opening and closing state;
- b) Remove all maintenance accessories (such as blind plates) and maintenance signs installed for safe maintenance;
- c) Inspect the system and remove foreign matter from it;
- d) open and close the drain valve again;
- e) crank at least one turn to ensure no mechanical interference;
If the control panel of the unit does not display a phase sequence error after the unit is powered on, you can press the “Start” button to start up normally. After starting up, please confirm that the rotation direction of the driving motor and rotating equipment is correct, and confirm all safety protection devices. They are all in a proper operating state. The main engine of the screw compressor is strictly prohibited to reverse under any circumstances! The following situations must first confirm the main engine rotation:
1) Commissioning of the new machine;
2) Reconnect the power cord;
3) The manufacturer shall not be liable for any damage or injury caused by disregarding these warnings and precautions
4) After the start-up process of the unit is completed, the air compressor enters the automatic control state.

Operation of screw air compressor
1 After the unit is running normally, check whether there is oil leakage or air leakage everywhere in the unit, and stop immediately if there is any.
2 Check whether the operating parameters such as exhaust pressure and exhaust temperature are normal.
3 Make a good record of the work and operation, and compare whether the operation parameters are always normal. If there is any abnormal phenomenon, stop the machine in time and analyze and find the reason.
Shutdown of the air compressor
1 If you need to stop the unit, you only need to press the stop button, and the compressor will automatically unload for about 20-30 seconds and then stop. Do not use the emergency stop button to stop the machine without special reason.

Cut off the unit power supply
Easy to maintain
The compressor should be easy to install
Considering the convenience of installation, there are mobile, portable, and installation-free air compressors on the market now. The selected compressor should be small in size, light in weight and easy to install under the premise of meeting the gas consumption. For gas units with narrow gas sites (for ships and vehicles), vertical compressors should be selected; for gas units with long-distance changes (over 500 meters) in gas sites, mobile compressors should be considered.
The post-maintenance of the compressor is convenient and low cost
When choosing a compressor, the convenience and cost of daily maintenance of the compressor should be fully considered. Try to choose a compressor with a long replacement cycle for wearing parts (mainly oil and filter elements), strong versatility, and a long after-sales service period.
Other requirements for air compressors
Noise and vibration have a great impact on the body and mind of operators and the environment of workshops and factories. If there is always high decibel noise in the workshop, workers on the production site will feel irritable, which will definitely affect production efficiency and quality. Moreover, the National Environmental Protection Agency has a control upper limit for production noise, and the selected compressor has too much noise and does not meet environmental protection standards. If the compressor purchased by the user is to be placed on the production site, the compressor with low noise index and good anti-vibration performance should be selected as far as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: Why does excessively high discharge temperature in a screw air compressor pose a safety hazard?
A: Screw air compressors typically have high-temperature protection (usually automatically shutting down at 100°C – 110°C). If the temperature remains excessively high, it can cause lubricating oil to coke, accelerate component wear, and in severe cases, even lead to spontaneous combustion or explosion inside the oil-gas separator. Common causes include a clogged cooler, insufficient lubricating oil, or a clogged oil filter.
Q2: Can I directly press the “Emergency Stop” button to shut down the compressor during operation?
A: The emergency stop button must not be used in non-emergency situations. For normal shutdown, first press the “Stop” button to allow the equipment to enter the unloading operation phase, and then disconnect the power after the internal pressure has been completely released. Directly stopping the compressor can cause high-temperature lubricating oil backflow or prevent timely system pressure release, which can damage electrical control components and mechanical seals over time.
Q3: Why must the air compressor be manually drained (water drained) before starting?
A: Compressed air contains a large amount of moisture. If condensate at the bottom of the gas tank or oil tank is not drained in time, the moisture will enter the lubrication system, causing oil emulsification, reducing lubrication efficiency, and even corroding the internal rotor of the main unit. It is recommended to check the automatic drain valve before starting the machine daily or periodically.
